Skill Sets in Document BOMs and Construction Orders
Skill sets define resource qualification requirements for manufacturing operations in COSMO Process Manufacturing. When COSMO Process Manufacturing is used with COSMO Discrete Manufacturing, skill sets can be assigned starting from the Master BOM and/or directly to Document BOM and Construction Order lines to specify which resource skills, manufacturing skills, or work center groups are required or desired for producing BOM components.
This integration enables resource scheduling based on skill requirements specified directly in the BOM structure, similar to how skill sets function in Production Structures in COSMO Process Manufacturing. When production orders are created from these BOM structures, skill sets are transferred to production order routing for scheduling.
Assign Skill Sets to BOM Lines
Skill sets are assigned per BOM line when resource scheduling requirements must be defined for component production.
Open the Master BOM, Document BOM, or Construction Order.
Select the line to which you want to assign skill sets.
Choose Line > Skill Sets on the Line menu of the Lines FastTab in the Master BOM or Construction Order, or the Skill Sets action on the Related menu in the Document BOM.
The BOM Skill Sets page opens and shows only skill set records for the selected source line.
In the Time Type field, choose whether the skill set applies to Setup time or Run time. Resource scheduling matches skills based on the time type of the operation.
In the Skill Set Code field, choose the skill set that defines the required or desired skills for this operation from existing skill sets configured in COSMO Process Manufacturing.
The Description field is automatically populated based on the selected Skill Set Code but can be modified if needed.
In the Number field, specify how many resources with the defined skills are required at one time for this operation. The default value is 1.
In the Attention % field, specify the required attention per resource as a percentage. Each resource can be a maximum of 100% attentive at one point in time. Use this field to specify multi-machine operations where a resource's attention is divided. The default value is 100%.
The No. of Skills field shows the number of individual skills defined in the selected skill set. To view or modify the skills included in the skill set, choose the Skills action.
Maintain Skills in Skill Sets
On the BOM Skill Sets page, choose the Skills action to open the related skill set entries.
In the BOM Skill Set Entries page, you can maintain required and desired skills that define the requirement profile used for scheduling. The fields in this page are described in the following table.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Type | Specifies whether the requirement is a Skill (basic resource qualification), a Manufacturing Skill (with specific code or numeric values), or a Work Center Group. |
| Code | Defines the skill, manufacturing skill, or work center group code required for the operation. The available codes depend on the Type selected. |
| Priority | Specifies whether the skill is Mandatory or Desired. Resources must meet all mandatory skills to be automatically allocated by the resource scheduling system. Desired skills are preferred but not required. |
| Req. Code Value | Specifies the required code value when Type = Manufacturing Skill and the manufacturing skill has a Data Type = Code. |
| Req. Num. Value From | Specifies the minimum numeric value required when Type = Manufacturing Skill and the manufacturing skill has a Data Type = Integer or Decimal. Resources must have this value or higher. |
| Req. Num. Value To | Specifies the maximum numeric value required when Type = Manufacturing Skill and the manufacturing skill has a Data Type = Integer or Decimal. Resources must have this value or lower. |
Note
Only one Work Center Group can be assigned per skill set. Multiple skills and manufacturing skills can be assigned to a single skill set.
BOM Comparison
When you run the Compare BOM action for Document BOMs or Construction Orders, skill set differences are included in the compare process.
Skill sets can generate compare changes and can be processed as insert or modify operations.
If the selected target is an archive, compare-only mode applies and changes cannot be applied.
For more information, see Compare Construction Orders and Compare Document BOMs.
Copy and Paste Behavior
When BOM lines are copied and pasted in Document BOM or Construction Order, associated skill sets and skill set entries are copied with the line context.
This applies to line copy processes that use the Discrete Manufacturing clipboard functions.
Transfer to Production Orders
When production orders are created or updated from Document BOM or Construction Order lines, skill sets are transferred to production order routing skill sets.
This ensures resource qualification requirements are available in production order scheduling.
Archive Behavior
Archived Document BOM and Construction Order lines also provide the Skill Sets action.
In archive skill set pages, the Skills action opens archive skill set entries with source document and version context.
Skill set archives are read-only and cannot be modified. Use them to review the skill requirements that were in place when the BOM was archived.
Scope and Limits
For Process Manufacturing (PM), skill sets apply only to Work Center and Machine Center operations. Tool and insert operations do not support skill sets.
