Prototype Item without Master BOM in Sales Line

Using the prototype function without Master BOMs allows you to perform a prototype comparison for items that do not have a Master BOM, specifically focusing on items with the "Purchase" procurement method. It involves setting up an item as a prototype and assigning a checklist. The function checks if an item already exists based on the prototype and inserts it into the sales line if found; otherwise, it generates a new item or variant.

In the Sales Quote, Sales Order, and Blanket Sales Order lines, the Calculate Prototype action calculates the final item/variant from prototype by assigned checklist and attributes for the current sales line (no Document BOM will be generated). In general, the process is:

    • New Item (Variant) will be created if not matching the parameters
    • Existing Item (Variant) will be used if matching the parameters

    Setup

The setup involves creating a prototype item/variant and a checklist.

    Create the prototype item/variant

    1. Create the item.
    2. Turn on the Prototype toggle.
    3. In the Prototype Type field, choose whether to create a prototype Item or Variant.
    4. In the Prototype No. Series field, assign a number series for the prototype.
    5. On the Related menu, choose Item > Attributes DM and assign the attributes to be used for comparison between the item attribute and checklist variable.

    Create the checklist

    1. Create the checklist, including the variable(s) to compare to the item attributes.
    2. Open the item.
    3. On the Related menu, choose Item > Checklist.
    4. In the Checklist Type and Checklist Code fields, assign the new checklist information.
    5. Select the Sales checkbox.

    Process

After assigning the prototype item/variant to the sales line, fill in the checklist, and then on the Lines FastTab, choose Line > Document BOM > Calculate Prototype. The No. field is updated with the new prototype number if the checklist and attributes do not match an existing item/variant, and an existing number if the checklist and attributes do match an existing item/variant.

    Note

The Calculate Prototype action should not be used on prototype items with Master BOMs. For information about using prototype items with Master BOMs in sales lines, see Prototype Item in Sales Line.
