General Components

General Components are components that do not have the characteristics of services or items and are ultimately settled via G/L accounts. However, the BOM Item No. field provides the ability to assign an item with a BOM to a general component for use in the project line budget (see Entering BOMs in Project Structure).

External Services are used for purchase because Resources cannot be purchased with standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central functionality.

Additionally, general components can be set up for processing WIP. On the Planning and Processing FastTab of the General Component Card, the WIP Component field is used with WIP Basis = Project. When this component is added as a position in the Project Budget Calculation, the WIP View toggle is automatically turned on and, therefore, used for the WIP calculation. The setting in the WIP not activatable field defaults to the Activatable WIP checkbox in the Project Line Budget (Project Planning and Processing page). General components can be set up and used for a summary project line for different costs that are not allowed to be considered for WIP values.
