Application Structure
COSMO Mobile Solution consists of three parts: a Business Central Application, an Intermediate Layer, and the Mobile Application. Connection among these integrated parts will make the operation smooth and stable.
Business Central Application: A Business Central extension with all the necessary settings that are needed for the mobile application to run properly.
Intermediate Layer: The main task for the intermediate layer is to proxy data provided by Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central to mobile phones. It uses Business Central's OData API to get data from the ERP system and translates them which will be passed through a REST API for the mobile devices. The intermediate layer is free of a specific type. It recognizes the customers' Business Central schema at runtime. This causes that customers don't have to host this layer on their own, but COSMO CONSULT hosts the API.
Mobile Application: A flexible application designed for mobile devices such as phones, handhelds, or barcode scanners.
The solution is available for both SaaS and on-premises (OnPrem) environments. Functionality is almost the same, but authentication can be different because the OnPrem version allows basic and Windows authentication, while the SaaS version is based on OAuth authentication.
App Naming
To help avoid confusion and differentiate between the COSMO Mobile Solution app (Business Central extension) and the COSMO Mobile Solution app (used on mobile devices), the following naming is used throughout the content:
- "COSMO Mobile Solution" refers to the Business Central extension where the general setup, users, pages, roles, etc. are defined/configured, which will work with/be used in the mobile application on the mobile devices. However, there are some cases in which "web client" or "Business Central" is used when more appropriate for context.
- "Mobile Application" (or "mobile application") refers to the app on the Android mobile device, which is used to perform the functions defined in the COSMO Mobile Solution Business Central extension.
