Multi-Level Calculations in Discrete Manufacturing
Multi-Level Calculation in make-to-order production enables cost calculation across all production levels when working with Document BOMs and Construction Orders. When you create calculations for these document types, the Multi-Level Calculation field is automatically activated, ensuring that all subordinate production levels are included in the cost calculation.
For general information about Multi-Level Calculation functionality, see Multi-Level Calculations in the Calculation Help.
Automatic Activation
The Multi-Level Calculation field is automatically enabled when you create a calculation with one of the following calculation types:
- Doc. BOM (Blanket Order) – created from blanket sales orders with Document BOMs
- Doc. BOM (Quote) – created from sales quotes with Document BOMs
- Doc. BOM (Order) – created from sales orders with Document BOMs
- Doc. BOM (Project) – created from project planning lines with Document BOMs
- Construction Order – created from construction orders
- Construction Order (Project) – created from project construction orders
For these calculation types, Multi-Level Calculation is activated automatically because Document BOMs and Construction Orders are inherently multi-level production structures in Discrete Manufacturing.
Create Multi-Level Calculations from Sales Orders
To create a multi-level calculation from a sales order with a Document BOM:
Create a sales order for an item with a multi-level BOM structure.
Assign a Document BOM to the sales order line by choosing Line > Document BOM > Document BOM on the Lines FastTab.
In the sales line, choose Line > Document BOM > Calculation Doc. BOM on the Lines FastTab.
- If a single calculation exists for the sales document line, the Calculation Card opens with the existing calculation.
- If no calculations exist or multiple calculations exist, the Calculations page opens:
- Choose the New action to create a calculation.
- Choose the Edit or View action to open an existing calculation.
If the Standard Calc. Schedule No. field is filled in on the item, the standard calculation schedule is used for the new calculation. Otherwise, the Calculation Schedules page opens for you to select a calculation schedule manually.
The values from the sales document line are transferred to the calculation header. The Calculation Type is set based on the sales document type (for example, Doc. BOM (Order) for sales orders).
On the General FastTab, the Multi-Level Calculation toggle is automatically turned on. If you only want to calculate the top level without subordinate production levels, turn off the Multi-Level Calculation toggle.
Choose the Update Calculation action to calculate the values.
When Multi-Level Calculation is enabled, the calculation includes:
- The top-level item and its immediate components
- All subordinate production levels and their components
- All routing operations and costs across all levels
For more information, see Document BOM Calculations.
Expected Calculations for Production Orders
Expected calculations can be created for production orders generated from Document BOMs and Construction Orders. To include the subordinate production order levels, turn on the Multi-Level Calculation toggle on the calculation.
To create an expected calculation for a production order
Open the production order created from a Document BOM or Construction Order.
On the Lines FastTab, choose Line > Calculation (Expected) or Line > Calculation > Calculation (Expected).
- If concurrent calculations are enabled, the Calculation (Expected) is automatically created and assigned to the production order and concurrent calculation.
- If no calculation exists for the production order line, the Calculations page opens. Choose the New action to create a new calculation and press Enter to assign a number.
If the Standard Calc. Schedule No. field on the item is filled in, the standard calculation schedule is used for the new calculation. Otherwise, the Calculation Schedules page opens for you to select a calculation schedule manually.
The values from the production order line are transferred to the calculation header.
On the General FastTab, turn on the Multi-Level Calculation toggle to include the subordinate production order levels. If you only want to calculate the top level, leave the toggle turned off.
Choose the Update Calculation action to calculate the expected costs.
When Multi-Level Calculation is enabled, the calculation includes all subordinate production levels and their associated components and routing operations.
Actual Calculations for Production Orders
Actual calculations reflect the true costs incurred during production for Document BOM and Construction Order-based production orders.
To create an actual calculation for a production order
Open the production order created from a Document BOM or Construction Order.
On the Lines FastTab, choose Line > Calculation > Calculation (Actual).
- If concurrent calculations are enabled, the Calculation (Actual) is automatically created and assigned to the production order and concurrent calculation.
Choose the Update Calculation action to calculate the actual costs from posted values.
When Multi-Level Calculation is enabled, the actual calculation includes all posted costs from all subordinate production levels.
Multi-Level Calculations in Concurrent Calculations
When concurrent calculation is enabled for a Document BOM or Construction Order calculation, the following calculations are assigned to the same concurrent calculation:
- Sales order calculation is created when you create a calculation from a sales order line with a Document BOM.
- Production order calculations (expected and actual) are assigned when a production order is created from the Document BOM.
All these calculations are linked to the same concurrent calculation number, allowing cost comparison across the production lifecycle.
For information about how calculations for production orders are allocated to concurrent calculations, see Production Orders Created from Sales Orders.
For more information about concurrent calculations, see Concurrent Calculations.
