Master BOM Template
Master BOMs are created in the Master BOM page, accessed using Tell Me. Choose the icon, enter Master BOMs, and then choose the related link.
General FastTab
The information in the General FastTab defines the entire Master BOM. Each field is described in the following table.
Field | Description |
---|---|
Code | Unique identifier of the Master BOM that can contain up to 20 characters. |
Master BOM Type | Defines the kind of BOM that is used (for example, SALES, TECHNICAL, etc.). |
Description and Description 2 | Description of the Master BOM; each allows a maximum of 50 characters. |
Status | Indicates the status of the Master BOM. The options are: - New: The status is set automatically to New with the creation of a Master BOM. In this status, the Master BOM can be worked on. - Certified: With this status, a Master BOM can be used in BOMs in sales documents and in construction orders. With this status, a Master BOM cannot be edited. If you use a Master BOM that is not certified, an error message opens. - Under Development: This status indicates that a Master BOM is being worked on. After the changes are made, the status must be set to Certified. - Closed: This status indicates that the Master BOM has become outdated and can no longer be worked on; this corresponds to a blockage of the BOM. |
Routing Type | Used the same as the Routing Type field is used in standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central routings. The options are Serial and Parallel. |
Quantity | Identifies the quantity to which the component data refers. |
Unit of Measure Code | Quantity unit of measure that leads the Master BOM. |
Production View Link | Identifies a production view link. |
Version Nos. | Reference to the number series for Master BOM versions. |
Last Status Modified Date | Date of the last status change of the Master BOM. |
Last Status Modified User ID | User ID of the last person who changed the status of the Master BOM. |

Last User ID Modified | User ID of the last person who last changed the Master BOM. |
Act. Version No. | Number of the current Master BOM version. |
Lines FastTab
Master BOMs represent the product structure as a type of resource list, therefore there is no separation between BOMs and routing.
The fields on the Lines FastTab are described in the following table.
Field | Description |
---|---|
Type | Identifies the type of BOM line. The options are: - <Blank>: This option is mainly used to insert a comment in a manufacturing BOM. - Account (G/L): This option allows for the selection of a G/L account. - Item: With this option, an item from the item list can be registered as a component of a BOM. - If an item possesses a Master BOM, this is considered automatically and transferred to the Document BOM / Construction Line, if the Part Type field is set to Production in the item card. - If the Part Type field is set to Standard, the item is treated as the standard. - If the Part Type is set to Purchase, the item is treated as in standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central but a variant code will be created automatically when the status of a Document BOM or Construction Line is changed to Released. If the Information Line checkbox is selected in the Document BOM setup, then the components from items with the Part Type field of Standard or Purchase are copied into a Document BOM. - Resource: With this option, resources can be selected. The use of resources in the Master BOM is useful when indirect ranges (for example, construction) in the parts list are captured and related to the value to be considered. If no Manufacturing modules are used, resources replace the function of work centers and/or machine centers. - Work Center: Selection of a job for a processing step. - Machine Center: Selection of a group of jobs for a processing step. - Master BOM: Selection of another Master BOM. The components of this Master BOM will not be transferred as its own assembly group but will be copied directly into the current BOM level. - Production BOM: Selection of a production BOM. The components of this production BOM will not be transferred in as its own assembly group but will be copied directly into the current BOM level. The BOM will be exploded when the production order is created. Additionally, this type is used with the integration of COSMO Process Manufacturing (see Integration of COSMO Process Manufacturing). |
Position | Reference to the design item number of a CAD design. The field is for informational purposes only. |
No. | Number of the appropriate items, resources, work center, machine center, or a G/L account. |
Description | Description from the Item Card. The item description is copied into the Master BOM and can be changed if necessary. |
Master BOM Exists | Indicates if the item has assigned to it an own Master BOM. Selecting this checkbox opens the Master BOM page if only one Master BOM is assigned to the item. If more than one Master BOM is assigned to the item, the Item - Master BOM page opens (which can also be opened from the Lines FastTab by choosing Line > Item - Master BOM). In the Item - Master BOM page, choose the Card action to open the Master BOM page for the selected line. NOTE: If line Type = Master BOM, the related Master BOM page opens. |
Formula Valid | See Dynamic Master BOM. |
Formula Quantity | See Dynamic Master BOM. |
Quantity | Indicates the quantity of this component. If nothing is entered in the Formula Quantity field, then this field is used in the calculation (see the Formula Quantity field). With work centers and machine centers, this field is used for the calculation of the time requirement according to the following formula: Time requirement = Tr + Te/ Lot size * Quantity NOTE: When opening the Master BOM in a Document BOM, the contents of this field are transferred to the Exp. Quantity field. |
Unit of Measure Code | Quantity unit of measure from the components. |
Location Code | Main warehouse location from the Main Location Code field on the Item Card. If necessary, this setting can be changed. |
Formula Setup Time | See Dynamic Master BOM (only relevant with the Type field set to Work Center and/or Machine Center). |
Setup Time | Preparation time for the processing step (only relevant with the Type field set to Work Center and/or Machine Center). |
Setup Time Unit of Meas. Code | Time unit, in which the setup time is planned (only relevant with the Type field set to Work Center and/or Machine Center). |

Run Time | Operating time for the processing step (only relevant with the Type field set to Work Center and/or Machine Center). |
Run Time Unit of Meas. Code | Time unit, in which the run time is planned (only relevant with the Type field set to Work Center and/or Machine Center). |
Part Type | The part type of the item (does not apply to capacity positions and resources). The part type defaults from the item master and can be modified on a BOM basis. |
Calculation Group Code | Groups items, work centers, machine centers, resources, or G/L accounts for calculation purposes (see Calculation Groups in Order-Related BOMs). |
Concurrent Capacities | Specifies the number of machines or persons that are working concurrently. The default value is "1" for all line types. However, if a different number is specified in the Machine Center Card, that value is used instead. For Work Centers and Machine Centers, this value is transferred to the Routings of the Production Order. This field can be changed manually. |
Line No. | Indicates the line number of the Master BOM. |
Description 2 – Description 5 | Descriptions from the Item Card. The item descriptions are copied into the Master BOM and can be changed if necessary. |
Variant | Number of the item variant, if a variant item is selected. |
Length | Identifies a length measurement. If this measurement should be calculated with the help of the configuration feature, it is necessary to insert an attribute with a formula. The attribute is defined on the Dyn. BOM FastTab of the Configure to Order Setup page in the Variable for Length field. |
Width | Identifies a width measurement. If this measurement should be calculated with the help of the configuration feature, it is necessary to insert an attribute with a formula. The attribute is defined on the Dyn. BOM FastTab of the Configure to Order Setup page in the Variable for Width field. |

The attribute is defined on the Dyn. BOM FastTab of the Configure to Order Setup page in the Variable for Weight field. |
Depth | Identifies a depth measurement. If this measurement should be calculated with the help of the configuration feature, it is necessary to insert an attribute with a formula. The attribute is defined on the Dyn. BOM FastTab of the Configure to Order Setup page in the Variable for Depth field. |
Calculation Formula | Determines how to calculate the Quantity field. The options are: - <Blank>: Quantity = Quantity per - Length: Quantity = Length * Quantity per - Length * Width: Quantity = Length * Width * Quantity per - Length * Width * Depth: Quantity = Length * Width * Depth * Quantity per - Weight: Quantity = Weight * Quantity per - Fixed Quantity: Quantity = Quantity per (see Microsoft Documentation for more information). - Recipe: Used with the integration of COSMO Process Manufacturing (see Integration of COSMO Process Manufacturing). |
Quantity per | Identifies a quantity per value. If this value should be calculated with the help of the configuration feature, it is necessary to insert a formula in the Formula Quantity per field. For item lines, the calculated value is also based on the Rounding Precision in the Item Card. Therefore, when the Master BOM is requested in the Document BOM or Construction Line, the rounding precision is considered and cannot be changed if it does not match the specified rounding. For example, if an item on the line has a Rounding Precision set to 1, then you cannot change the Exp. Quantity from 3 to 3.2 or 3.252 but you can change it to 4. |
Formula Quantity per | See Dynamic Master BOM. |
Qty. per Base Unit of Measure | Indicates the component quantity in the base quantity unit of the item. |
Quantity (Base) | The quantity in this field is the expressed quantity of the item in the instruction, in fundamental units. This field is automatically populated. |
Spare Part | Spare part setting from the Item Card. If necessary, this setting can be changed. |

Separate Delivery | Indicates if the component is planned for a separate delivery (see Separate Delivery of Semi-Finished Goods). |
Wait Time | Wait time for the series of operations (only relevant with the Type of Work Center or Machine Center). If this wait time should be calculated with the help of the configuration feature, it is necessary to insert an attribute with a formula. The attribute is defined on the Dyn. BOM FastTab of the Configure to Order Setup page in the Variable for Wait Time field. |
Move Time | Move time for the series of operations (only relevant with the Type of Work Center or Machine Center). If this move time should be calculated with the help of the configuration feature, it is necessary to insert an attribute with a formula. The attribute is defined on the Dyn. BOM FastTab of the Configure to Order Setup page in the Variable for Move Time field. |
Wait Time Unit of Meas. Code | Time unit in which the wait time is planned (only relevant with the Type of Work Center or Machine Center). |
Move Time Unit of Meas. Code | Time unit in which the move time is planned (only relevant with the Type of Work Center or Machine Center). |
Position 2 – Position 3 | Reference to the design item number of a CAD design. The fields are for informational purposes only. |
Production Lead Time | Indicates the difference between date of completion and date of readiness. |
Scrap % | Defines the percentage of scrap for the master BOM line. To get the same results of calculating with Scrap % as in Manufacturing, then the Formula Quantity per and/or Quantity per fields must be used in the Master BOM instead of the Formula Quantity and/or Quantity fields. If you calculate with the Formula Quantity and Quantity fields, the Scrap % is subtracted when creating the production order. These fields calculate the Exp. Quantity field in the Document BOM/Construction Line directly, without considering scrap. When the production order is created, the component quantity is then calculated there so that the same Exp. Quantity is also calculated in the Prod. Order Component. |
Send-Ahead Quantity | Specifies the output of the operation that must be completed before the next operation can be started. |
Standard Task Code | Indicates the Standard Task Code for the master BOM line. |
Base Material | Identifies the assignment of a Base Material to the item. The Base Material will be used for the work package (see Work Packages). |

Belongs to Prod. View Link | Indicates which assembly unit this component is linked to and thus will become part of its configuration when viewing the construction order in the production view. |
Transfer to Sales Document | Determines if the Document BOM lines (where Type = Item, Resource, or Account(G/L)) will be transferred to the current Sales Quote/Order lines. For more information, see Transfer Lines to Sales Documents. |
Parallel Operation Code | Provides a simplified process for defining parallel routings. |
Operation No. / Next Operation No. / Previous Operation No. | Have the same function as in standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central routings. In the Master BOM line, these fields only work if Type = Work Center or Machine Center. If each field in the line is empty, no checks are done when the Master BOM is certified. If any field is populated and: - Routing Type = Serial, the Operation No., Previous Operation No. and Next Operation No. fields will be populated automatically. - Routing Type = Parallel, the Operation No. and Next Operation No. fields must be populated manually. The Previous Operation No. field will be populated automatically (standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central). |
Long-Lead Item | Setting from the Item Card that identifies if the item needs a longer time to be delivered or produced. Choosing the value in this field opens the Items page, filtered on the item, regardless if the value is Yes or No. |
Routing Link Code | Connects material with a processing step. In the order completion process, the Routing Link Code is used to assign material submitted to an external manufacturing processing step. |
Enclosure | Indicates material submitted for an external manufacturer (see Subcontracting with Supply of Material). |
Enclosure Drop Shipment | Indicates material provided for external processing that must be drop shipped to the vendor (see Drop Shipment to the Subcontractor). |

Action Bar
The actions on the action bar are described in this section.
Set Operation Codes
This action automatically populates the Operation No., Previous Operation No. and Next Operation No. fields in the Master BOM lines, as opposed to creating the operations on certification.
Version
This function opens the Master BOMs Version page, where new and existing versions of the Master BOM are created and viewed. Choose the New action to create a version or select an existing version and choose the Edit button to open the Master BOM Version page.
The Master BOM Version page is structured like the Master BOM template, but it includes a validity date feature. The Starting Date is the date from which the version is to be valid. All versions with a starting date older than the here-entered date become invalid when this Master BOM version becomes valid. This allows you to set up new Master BOM versions, which become valid automatically at the defined start date.
Copy from
This function makes it possible to copy all lines from an existing Master BOM/Master BOM Version to a new Master BOM.
If the Copy from function is run on a Master BOM with lines, a message will open asking to delete the existing lines. Choose the No button to stop the process; choose the Yes button to delete the existing lines and replace with the new Master BOM.
It is not possible to copy the same Master BOM into itself, unless the version is different.
Copy from Prod. BOM
This function provides the ability to create multiple master BOMs based on existing production BOMs, if the originating production BOM is a multi-level BOM.
The fields on the batch job are described in the following table.
Field | Description |
---|---|
Prod. BOM No. | Number of the production BOM from which to be copied. |
Prod. BOM Version | Version of the production BOM from which to be copied. |
Routing No. | Number of the Routing from which to be copied. |
Routing Version | Version of the Routing from which to be copied. |
BOM Type | Type of the new master BOM, which must be filled in on the Master BOM to determine if only the first BOM level should be copied (BOM Type = empty) or if all levels should be copied (BOM Type <> empty.). It will be generated for the assembly units in the substructure Master BOMs with the stated BOM Type. |
Replace Existing Master BOM-Item Relations | - If turned on, the copy function replaces all Master BOM lines in all Master BOMs that are related to the items. This setting is needed to copy multi-level BOMs. - If turned off, only new Master BOMs can be created the item. However, if a Master BOM is already related to the item (with the correct BOM Type), then the copy process with stop at this level. |
Copy with Routings | If turned on, and a multi-level BOM will be copied, then the Routings in each level will be copied also. |
Status After Change | Status that the Master BOMs will have after the exchange and/or change of items. The options are New, Certified, Under Development, Closed, and Maintain. |
Syntax Check
This function validates the syntax in formulas within the Master BOM lines.
