Spare Part Action (DM)

The Spare Part Action (DM) field on a service line records how a service line relates to a Service BOM component, and drives how the Service BOM is updated when the corresponding service shipment is posted. Several functions in COSMO Discrete Manufacturing set this field automatically, but it can also be reviewed or changed manually on an existing service line.

Field Values

The values of the Spare Part Action (DM) field that are used within the Service BOM and In-House Repair process are described in the following table.

Value Meaning
<blank> The line has no relation to a Service BOM component. This is also the value set by the Ignore option described under To set a different spare part action manually.
Component Replaced The service line substitutes an existing Service BOM component with a new one.
Component Installed The service line adds a new component without retiring an existing one.
Component Repaired The service line represents a component that is retained but tracked as serviced.
Analysis The service line is a provisional line used during an In-House Repair analysis.
Analysis Production Order The service line is the cost collector for a diagnostic production run.
Production Order The service line is the repair output of a Production Order.

For details on how Component Replaced, Component Installed, and Component Repaired affect the Service BOM at shipment, see Service BOM Update on Service Shipment. Analysis and Analysis Production Order lines never affect the Service BOM, as noted on that page. <blank> lines have no relation to a Service BOM component and are not evaluated at shipment.

Note

The field can also hold values set by the standard Business Central spare part replacement function. These values are not part of the Service BOM or In-House Repair process and are not described in this section.

Automatic Assignment

The following functions set the Spare Part Action (DM) field automatically.

Function Values set
Insert Service Lines from Service BOM to Service Item Worksheet Component Replaced (Replace Component) or left blank (Ignore)
Item Service Codes Component Repaired for repair lines, Component Replaced for automatically linked spare/wear part lines — see Repair Lines from Item Service Codes
In-House Repair walkthrough (analysis, quote refinement, production completion) Analysis, Analysis Production Order, Component Repaired, Component Installed, Production Order — see the walkthrough

To set a different spare part action manually

The selection is only available for service lines of type Item, and only while the service item has an active Service BOM.

  1. Open the Service Item Worksheet page for the service item line.

  2. Select the service line to change.

  3. In the Spare Part Action (DM) field, choose the AssistEdit button (you cannot type in this field). The AssistEdit is only available while the worksheet page is editable.

  4. If the item number of the service line is different from the item number of the service item, a dialog opens with the text Choose action to apply for followed by the type, number, and description of the service line. Choose one of the following options.

Option Resulting Spare Part Action (DM) Shown
Repair Component Component Repaired Only if the Repair field is selected on the service document.
Analysis Analysis Only if the Repair field is selected on the service document and another service line of the same service item line already has Component Repaired.
    Replace Component Component Replaced Always
    New Component Component Installed Always
    Ignore Empty Always
  5. For Repair Component, Replace Component, and New Component, a list of Service BOM lines opens so that you can select the affected component. Select a line and choose the OK button.

    • For Repair Component, the list is filtered to active Service BOM lines of type Item with the same item number as the service line.
    • For Replace Component, the list shows the active Service BOM lines of type Item.
    • For New Component, the list shows the active Service BOM lines. If the Service BOM has no active lines, no list is shown.

If you cancel the selection dialog in step 4, the Spare Part Action (DM) field is not changed. If you cancel the list of Service BOM lines in step 5, an error is shown and the field is not changed.

For Repair Component, the Quantity is set to 1 and the Return Reason Code is taken from the Repair Return Reason Code field of the Configure to Order Setup page. If that setup field is empty, an error is shown.

For Analysis and Ignore, no component is selected, and any existing component reference and Service BOM reference on the service line are cleared.

Note

If the item number of the service line is the same as the item number of the service item, this dialog is not used. If the Repair field is selected on the service document, the Spare Part Action (DM) field is set to Component Repaired without any dialog; the Quantity is set to 1 and the Return Reason Code is taken from the Repair Return Reason Code field. If the Repair field is not selected, the field is set through the standard Business Central spare part replacement function instead, which is not part of this process.

No dialog is shown for service lines that already have Production Order or Analysis Production Order.

The value of the Spare Part Action (DM) field controls which follow-up actions are available on the service line. The Return Order action on the Service Item Worksheet page is only shown and only enabled for service lines with Component Repaired.
