Sales Discount in Kind
In many lines of business, it is customary to give away additional free items when selling a certain minimum quantity or not to charge the customer for a part of the sold items. The customer pays for the ordered quantity and gets the additional items for free.
These extras are called discount in kind, or discount in form of bonus goods. This means that in addition to the ordered quantity of an item, free samples are sent as well. For example, when the customer orders 50 units of item P-10500, they will also get 2 units of item P-10501 based on a percentage of the ordered quantity; or if they order 100 units of item P-10501, they will get 5 more units of it free of charge based on an absolute value (buy 100 or more, get 5 free).
When a sales quote or order line is created with an item where a discount in kind has been assigned, then an additional sales line with the bonus item is added automatically after the Quantity is entered. The additional line includes the bonus item and its calculated quantity. The Line Discount % field of the bonus item is set to 100 and the Unit Price... field is blank.
Note
It is possible to have more than one discount in kind for an item. For each granted bonus item, an additional line is automatically added.
The following hierarchy is used to determine the valid configuration of items that allow a discount in kind:
- Priority 1: Campaign
- Priority 2: Customer
- Priority 3: Customer Disc. Group
- Priority 4: All Customers
As soon as a corresponding record is found, the other priorities are not used.
Setup
Setup is handled in the Sales Discount in Kind page, which is accessible in the following ways:
- using Tell Me. Choose the icon, enter Sales Discount in Kind, and then choose the related link.
- filtered by campaign in the Campaign Card by choosing Campaign > Sales Discount in Kind on the Related menu.
- filtered by customer in the Customer Card by choosing Customer > Sales Discount in Kind on the Related menu.
- filtered by customer discount group in the Customer Disc. Groups page by choosing Cust. Disc. Groups > Sales Discount in Kind on the Related menu.
The fields in the Sales Discount in Kind page are described in the following table. Information entered in the filter fields in the General FastTab is inherited in the fields on the lines.

Sales Type Filter / Sales Type | Defines who is able to receive discounts in kind (<Blank>, Customer, All Customer, Customer Discount Group, and Campaign). |
Sales Code Filter / Sales Code | Specifies the sales type (which Customer, Customer Price Group or Campaign). If the All Customers option is selected, this field remains blank. |
Starting Date Filter / Starting Date | Specifies the date from which the discount in kind is valid. |
Type Filter / Type | Specifies either an Item or Item Discount Group filter for which the discount in kind relates to. |
Code Filter / Code | Specifies the specific Item or Item Discount Code depending on the value in the Type Filter / Type field. |
Unit of Measure | Specifies how each unit of the item is measured. By default, the value in the Base Unit of Measure field on the Item Card is used. |
Minimum Quantity | Specifies the minimum quantity that the customer must purchase in order to gain the discount in kind. |
Bonus Item | Specifies the item that is granted as discount in kind. |
Bonus Item Variant | Specifies the item variant of the bonus item. |
Bonus Item Unit of Measure | Specifies how each unit of the bonus item is measured. By default, the value in the Base Unit of Measure of the bonus item is used. |
Bonus Item Method | Specifies how to calculate the quantity of the bonus item, in conjunction with the Bonus Item Value. The options are: - Absolute - Bonus Item Value defines the quantity to be added as the discount in kind. - Percentage - Sales Line Quantity is multiplied by the Bonus Item Value in percent. |
Bonus Item Value | Specifies a quantity or percentage value to calculate the discount in kind, in conjunction with the Bonus Item Method. |
Discount in Kind Rounding Precision | Specifies the rounding method to be used when the calculated discount in kind is not an integral value. |
Rounding Type | Specifies the rounding type used to calculate the discount in kind item quantity. |
Ending Date | Specifies the date to which the discount in kind is valid. |

Based on the setting in the first row:
- when customer 10000 places an order for 60 units of item P-10511, then a new line is added for item P-10721 with a calculated discount in kind of 3 (%5 of 60).
- when customer 20000 places an order for 60 units of item P-10511, no line is added.
Based on the setting in the second row:
- when customer 20000 places an order for 100 units of item P-10845, then a new line is added for item P-10845 with a calculated discount in kind of 2 (%2 of 100).
- when customer 10000 places an order for 100 units of item P-10845, no line is added.
Based on the setting in the third row:
- when customer 40000 places an order on July 13, 2022 for 50 units of item P-10625, then a new line is added for item P-6582 with a calculated discount in kind of 3 (absolute value if quantity >= 50).
- when customer 50000 places an order on July 13, 2022 for 49 units of item P-10625, no line is added.
- when customer 60000 places an order on August 3, 2022 for 50 units of item P-10625, no line is added.
Based on the settings in the first, fourth, and fifth rows:
- when customer 10000 places an order for 75 units of item P-10511, then two lines are added:
- item P-10721 with a calculated discount in kind of 3 (%5 of 60).
- item P-10677 with a calculated discount in kind of 1 (absolute value if quantity >= 75).
- when customer 20000 places an order for 75 units of item P-10511, then a new line is added for item P-10677 with a calculated discount in kind of 1 (absolute value if quantity >= 75).
- when customer 30000 places an order for 60 units of item P-10511, no line is added.
- when customer 20000 places an order for 120 units of item P-10511, then a new line is added for item P-10677 with a calculated discount in kind of 2 (absolute value if quantity >= 120).
