Operations in Master BOMs
The routing fields (Operation No., Previous Operation No., and Next Operation No.) in the Master BOM lines and the setting in the Routing Type field (Serial or Parallel) in the Master BOM header determine how routings are processed in COSMO Discrete Manufacturing.
In the Master BOM lines, operations can be generated in two ways:
- Entering a value in at least one of the Operation No., Previous Operation No., or Next Operation No. fields and then certifying the Master BOM.
- Using the Set Operation Codes action, which generates operation numbers regardless of whether a field is filled or not.
The processes for working with serial and parallel operations are described in the following sections.
Serial Operations
Serial operations, designated by Routing Type = Serial in the General FastTab, are calculated according to the value in the Operation No. field in the Master BOM lines. For example, if 10 is entered in the Operation No. field on the first routing line, then 20 will be entered for the next routing line, then 30 for the next, and so on.
Example
In the following video, a Master BOM is set up with the Routing Type field set to Serial. On the first routing line, 10 is entered in the Operation No. field and then the Master BOM is certified to generate the operation codes.
Upon certification, the Operation No. field in the following routing lines are calculated sequentially based on the 10 value:
Master BOM Line | Work Center No. | Operation No. | Previous Operation No. | Next Operation No. |
---|---|---|---|---|
10000 | 101 | 10 | 20 | |
20000 | 100 | 20 | 10 | 30 |
80000 | 400 | 30 | 20 | 40 |
90000 | 100 | 40 | 30 | 50 |
100000 | 400 | 50 | 40 | 60 |
...and so on |
Therefore, the Next Operation No. field on the first routing line (work center 101) and the Operation No. field on the second line are "20", and the Previous Operation No. field on the second line is "10", referencing back to the first routing line. The Next Operation No. field in the second line is "30", which references the Operation No. field for the next routing line (work center 400). This calculation is repeated for all routing lines in the Master BOM.
Parallel Operations
The Parallel Operation Code field provides a simplified process for defining parallel routings. For example, if Work Centers 100 and 400 should be done in parallel, both lines are assigned the same Parallel Operation Code, such as P1.
After certification or running the Set Operation Codes action, the Operation No. field is updated sequentially as done for Routing Type = Serial, while the Next Operation No. field in the routing line preceding the parallel operations is updated with both parallel operations. This set of parallel operations are then reflected in the following operations (Last Operation No.) accordingly.
Example
In the following video, a Master BOM is designated with Routing Type = Parallel and has two sets of parallel operations: on the first set of lines for work center 400 and 100, "P1" is entered in the Parallel Operation Code field and "P2" is entered for the second set.
Then the Set Operation Codes action is run to generate the operation codes.
Master BOM Line | Work Center No. | Parallel Operation Code | Operation No. | Previous Operation No. | Next Operation No. |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
10000 | 101 | 10 | 20 | ||
20000 | 100 | 20 | 10 | 30|40 | |
80000 | 400 | P1 | 30 | 20 | 50|60 |
90000 | 100 | P1 | 40 | 20 | 50|60 |
100000 | 400 | P2 | 50 | 30|40 | 70 |
110000 | 100 | P2 | 60 | 30|40 | 70 |
120000 | 200 | 70 | 50|60 | 80 | |
...and so on |
The Operation No. field on the routing lines is calculated sequentially starting with 10. The Next Operation No. on line 20000 shows both operations that were assigned "P1" (30|40) because these operations are done in parallel. On lines 80000 and 90000, the Next Operation No. shows both operations that were assigned "P2" (50|60) because these operations are done in parallel. On lines 100000 and 110000, the Previous Operation No. shows both "P1" operations (30|40), which refers to the previous lines. On line 120000, the Previous Operation No. shows both operations for "P2" (50|60), which refers to the previous lines. The remaining routing lines have no parallel operation assignments.
Operations in Document BOMs, Construction Order Lines, and Service BOMs
The fields in the Master BOM line (Operation No., Previous Operation No., and Next Operation No.) are also available in Document BOM, Construction Order lines, and Service BOMs. Fields populated in the Master BOM lines are copied to Document BOM/Construction Order lines/Service BOM line; otherwise these fields are empty.
In the Document BOM and Construction Order line, the fields are populated when the Status is changed to Released. At the latest, these fields are calculated when the Create Prod. Order action is run.
The values in the Operation No., Next Operation No., and Previous Operation No. fields are copied to the Prod. Order Routing lines.
