Create Items and BOMs
Items, Production BOMs, Routings, Production Structures, and Master BOMs can be created from the Sales Quote/Order line and Document BOM using the Create Items & BOMs function.
With this function, a new item gets created as a copy of the existing item, which replaces that item in the Sales Quote/Order line or Document BOM line. Concurrently, a new Production BOM, Routing, Production Structure, or Master BOM gets created, and can be automatically certified depending on the setup. For Production BOMs, Items, or Item Variants can be created.
Note
This function is only valid for items with Part Type = Production.
Depending on the Create Item and BOM Dialog setting in the Configure to Order Setup page, a request page will open for creating the items and BOMs or the items and BOMs will be created automatically using the defaults in the Configure to Order Setup page (see Configure to Order Setup, Construction FastTab).
Create Items and BOMs request page
The request page is opened for the Sales Quote/Order line by choosing Line > Document BOM > Create Items & BOMs on the Lines FastTab or for the Document BOM line by choosing the Create Items & BOMs action on the Actions menu.
Depending on the selection in the Target BOM Type field, other fields are active or inactive.

To create items and BOMs from sales quote or order
When running the function from the Sales Quote/Order line, the items/item variants and BOMs are created for the Sales Quote/Order line using the Document BOM lines.
- Open an existing or create a Sales Quote/Order.
- On the Lines FastTab, choose Line > Document BOM > Create Items & BOMs.
Note
You cannot run this function if a reservation exists for the item in the Sales Order line.
- If the request page opens:
- Choose the options as described in the table above.
- Choose the Yes button.
- A message opens stating what was created; choose the OK button.
To create items and BOMs from document BOM
When running the function from the document BOM line, the items/items variants and BOMs are created for the selected line and substructures.
- Open an existing Document BOM or create a Document BOM from a sales line.
- Select the document BOM line.
- On the Actions menu, choose the Create Items & BOMs action.
- If the request page opens:
- Choose the options as described in the table above.
- Choose the Yes button.
- A message opens stating what was created; choose the OK button.
- The Item/Variant Created checkbox is selected on the lines with new items or item variants.
Results of the Create Items & BOMs function
There are different results of running the Create Items & BOMs function based on the selections in the request page or defaulted from the Configure to Order Setup page.

Replacing Items/Item Variants
Once items or item variants have been created with this function, you can choose to maintain or replace them when running the function again.
For example, you ran the function for a Document BOM line and created item variants. These variants are still valid when you run the function for the Sales Quote/Order line. Instead of creating new variants, you do not turn on the Replace Created Items/Variants toggle in the request page, and therefore, the lines with existing variants are not changed but assembly items without existing items/variants will get new items/variants. If you turn the toggle on, all assembly items will get new item/variants.
Excluding Prototype Items/Variants
By default, the prototype feature in COSMO Discrete Manufacturing creates new item numbers or variants. If the Create Items and BOMs function is used with prototypes, the items created from prototypes will be overwritten. The Exclude Prototype Items/Variants field in the Configure to Order Setup page or Create Items and BOMs request page (if set to be shown) provides the ability to exclude prototype items from this function to prevent the creation of additional items.
If the Exclude Prototype Items/Variants toggle is turned on:
- No new item number will be created if the item is designated as a prototype item; only BOMs and/or routings will be created.
- Only a stockkeeping unit will be created if the prototype item is designated as a variant item; the BOMs and routings will be attached to this stockkeeping unit.
This setting provides the same results as described in Results of the Create Items & BOMs function except items/variants are not created.
